Anita Bryant, popular singer who became vocal opponent of gay rights, dies at 84

Supported by the Rev. Jerry Falwell among others in the 1970s, Bryant and her “Save Our Children” coalition opposed gay rights around the country, denouncing the “deviant lifestyle” of the gay community and calling gay people “human garbage.”
